Did Melania Trump Just Bring Back Bell Sleeves?

Melania Trump, applauded by her husband Donald, at the Republican National Convention, July 18, 2016.

I wanted to see Melania Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention last night because I was curious how she would do, since she has been largely absent on the campaign trail so far, and I also wanted to see what she would wear. I guessed she’d go with white and I was right. She seems to favor solid colors and wears the paler ones often. I really liked the sleeves on the dress she wore and I must not have been the only one who was impressed with them. It took me about one second to find out who her dress was by, Roksanda, a Serbian-born designer, another second to find the “Margot” dress on Net-a-Porter—where it was offered in black as well as off-white—and it was sold out within an hour of Melania’s speech! The designer must be thrilled. It’s interesting to note that Net-a-Porter described the off-white version as a “beautiful option for the modern bride!”

The Roksanda “Margot” dress in ivory was $2,190.

The color Melania wore sold for $2,190 and the black version was $1,365. I would definitely wear this dress in black. It reminds me so much of the beautiful black dresses I saw at the Balenciaga exhibit five years ago.

Love the silhouette and sleeves...

...and I am crazy for the back of the dress too.

I think it would be so exciting if designers would learn how to put sleeves on dresses again, because it feels like they’ve all been too lazy and afraid to do it for years now, so if nothing else, I hope Melania inspired those folks to get busy learning how to fit sleeves, whether they are bell shaped or not! It does appear that she had the sleeves altered a bit from their original look. Hers are shorter and more ruffled. I like them both ways! How about you?

Great sleeves on this dress! Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images.

You can see in this picture how she had the dress altered, both the sleeves and the fit!

Let me know what you think of the sleeves on this dress, the dress in general, and Melania’s speech, if you saw it. By the way, I am watching both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention, so this is NOT a political post in any way!

I thought Melania looked fab and would encourage her to smile more as she did last night.

Hi GSL, you are right, when she's not smiling that is some serious RBF going on, as I keep reading. The whole thing makes me laugh. xx

She is gorgeous and I think she looks amazing in white - I remember the white dress she wore when he announced his campaign. That white dress was also a knock out thought I can't remember who it was by. I think this dress is beautiful but not many will be able to wear this bc it shortens the arms and distracts too much unless you are nearly 6 foot. But I think she does have great fashion sense although i didn't like her wedding dress.xx

The white dress was just gorgeous & Melania rocked it (of course she would). RBF thats funny. A classic RBF is Victoria Beckham.

My Dear Jill,
There has never been a RBF that a precision guided GSL quip couldn't pierce.

Hi Naomi, I was wondering what you would make of this dress! Did you catch the big diamond earrings she wore? Quite nice. I loved the whole look. I think you may be right about not many being able to wear this dress. It was interesting to compare the original with what Melania wore. It definitely looks to me that she had the dress tightened everywhere and had the sleeves pulled up and gathered more tightly. I do like the shape of both dresses. I would LOVE to try on the black version! xx

Hi Rosie! I am reading online mean things about Melania's face, that old RBF thing. I remember I had to look that up when I first heard of it. And YES, Victoria Beckham is considered to have the non plus ultra of the RBF. It's all so ridiculous it makes me laugh. Looking forward to seeing what Ivanka wears on Thursday. xx

My Dear GSL, I would get quite a kick out of watching you try to make Melania laugh! xx

I'm sure The Daily Mail will give an account with Donald's reaction followed by White House press office version.

GSL, what do you mean, when you are getting into trouble because you make Melania laugh a little TOO much??? If you need a date for one of them fancy ol' WH state dinners (so you can keep Melania laughing of course), keep me in mind! xx

My Dear Jill,
Deep into the protectine layer of histones in Y chromosomes is a protective device activated by his mate's GSL induced giggle to go into DEFCON 5 protective posture, call for back-up, activate smoke grenades, and rapidly retreat.
As you can imagine, this wouldn't likely go unnoticed by keen eyed observers during Whitr House Statr Dinners...even what Cheshire Cats call the 'GSL Grin' have been known to cause similar occurances.

Oh I see, so you make Melania laugh, get in trouble with the Donald AND the Secret Service, and leave me, your State Dinner date (holding a champagne glass of course) and Melania (holding her own champagne glass plus a big smile caused by YOU and the bubbles) in the WH lurch while you disappear into the night. Do I have that right?

No darling, GSL always engineers his floor shows attentive to every detail. After getting GSL's impish wink, you excuse yourself citing Ladies Room visit just as events unfold soon followed by strategically placed chairs/banana peels keep clumsy SS Agents tackling ever elusive GSL who skips out the door and across the street to the Mayflower Bar where Jilly-Pie anxiously awaits in a quiet corner with chilled DP magnum...and bedroom eyes.

It is a beautiful and classy dress! I'm glad she wore the white one, but the black looks great! I saw on net-a-porter that there is a mid length version in navy with the sleeves on the inside in a marigold color! Ideally I'd like the silhouette you have with that color combo! I'll be interested to see the Melania effect on women's fashion, like Britain has the Kate effect. I have heard Melania interviewed before and she comes across very well. I'm glad you had this post! It's nice we can talk about a person without tearing them or each other apart over things we may or may not believe in.

I love the Belle sleeves, but I like them more on a top then a dress!

Oh GSL, you are making me laugh. Yowza! That is some narrative you've got going. Is this a scene from your next book? xx

Hi Michelle! I think I saw the version you describe, I love that the inside of the sleeves were a different color. It is unfortunate that her speech appears to have been lifted from Michelle's eight years ago, but I don't buy that Melania wrote one word of it, I think it was a speechwriter and I'm starting to wonder if someone thought they were being funny and decided to throw her under the bus. I am going to watch both conventions because I am so interested to see how each side presents itself this particular year. I'm wondering if Hillary will wear white at her own convention, I think she might! With that big pearl necklace of hers. What do you think?

I am noting the jewelry on the ladies of course. I spied the Love and the Juste Un Clou bracelets on Tiffany last night, a Trinity ring too, I believe (in diamonds!). I am also pretty positive she was wearing one of Ivanka's pendant necklaces the first night, looked to be amethyst set in diamonds. I want one of those myself, only in blue topaz! xx

Hi Nancy, I know what you mean. I am definitely keeping my eyes out for a ruffled sleeve blouse now! xx

It is a gorgeous dress :)

Hi Becky, the more I see this dress the more I think of both Balenciaga and Lacroix (all that 80s style, all the ruffles!). I wonder if those fuller styles will make a comeback. xx
