|Grace wearing the brooch in 1958. I love this photo of the family.|
Princess Grace owned some amazing brooches, but the ones I love the most from her collection are her animal brooches, and one I particularly like is her 1957 Cartier brooch featuring a hen sitting on top of a nest with three eggs made of pearls. I think it’s charming, adorable, and a bit of a fortune teller!

|Another great family photo.|
The photos here show her wearing it in 1958, a few months after Albert’s birth, and because she did have three children—Caroline in 1957, Albert in 1958, and Stephanie in 1965—the three eggs the hen sits on turned out to be personally meaningful for her. I love it when that happens with jewelry, don’t you?
The brooch was crafted in Paris, though I do not know if it was bespoke, she purchased it herself, or if it was a gift from Rainier. If you have insight do let us all know in the comments. It is made of repoussé gold (meaning hammered into relief from the reverse side), platinum, diamonds, an emerald eye, mother-of-pearl, pearls, and coral. It has been featured in exhibits on Grace’s style so be sure to tell me if you’ve seen it in person! It was also recreated for the 2014 movie Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman. I love the charm and whimsy of this piece!
