Princess Grace’s Cartier Hen Brooch

Grace wearing the brooch in 1958. I love this photo of the family.

Princess Grace owned some amazing brooches, but the ones I love the most from her collection are her animal brooches, and one I particularly like is her 1957 Cartier brooch featuring a hen sitting on top of a nest with three eggs made of pearls. I think it’s charming, adorable, and a bit of a fortune teller!

Cartier Paris, 1957.

Another great family photo.

The photos here show her wearing it in 1958, a few months after Albert’s birth, and because she did have three children—Caroline in 1957, Albert in 1958, and Stephanie in 1965—the three eggs the hen sits on turned out to be personally meaningful for her. I love it when that happens with jewelry, don’t you?

The brooch was crafted in Paris, though I do not know if it was bespoke, she purchased it herself, or if it was a gift from Rainier. If you have insight do let us all know in the comments. It is made of repoussé gold (meaning hammered into relief from the reverse side), platinum, diamonds, an emerald eye, mother-of-pearl, pearls, and coral. It has been featured in exhibits on Grace’s style so be sure to tell me if you’ve seen it in person! It was also recreated for the 2014 movie Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman. I love the charm and whimsy of this piece!

Let me know what you think of this brooch or any others that Grace owned that you like!

I like brooches when they have special sentimental value. Jill, did you ever see former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's collection of brooches? I was in Pittsburgh and saw the Art Museum had a big exhibition for her brooches...I didn't make it.

Hi GSL, my mother owns that book that Madeleine wrote about her brooches. She owns some AMAZING ones! I would love to see an exhibit of it. If it ever came here, I didn't know about it. I will have to check in on events in Augusta today. Or did it finish? I heard Jordan was in first place but hitting some bumps in the road. x

You know in east Asia they are very superstitious about hewellry and its stories like this which make them stick to their stories. But it's a clever little piece and I didn't think Cartier did whimsy like this? I'd have guessed VCA. I must see if she was a Chinese rooster sign BC it seems like it must have had specifics about it no? Curious now Jill xx

The winds of Augusta are gusting to 26mph so expect more bumps today...Jordan Speith hanging onto 1 shot lead...58yo Bernhard Langer, a 2 time Masters winner before Speith born lurks at 2 shots back. They tee off mid afternoon.

Hi Naomi, I didn't even think to look into what her Chinese sign is! Great thinking! Cartier has some lovely whimsical brooches from the 50s and 60s, not panther stuff either, and at a better price point than VCA too! A vintage Cartier brooch is definitely on my wish list. I have read that Grace had a few miscarriages before Stephanie came along so the fact that the hen is on three eggs and this brooch came into her possession in 1957 makes it seem like fate! I wish Stephanie would wear it. She has three children herself. x

My favorite part is when they get the green jacket and cry. Or was that just Bubba? I like Jordan so much, he is so humble, he is so young! Is today the final? I will go look. I am making a practice mint julep today to get ready for my Kentucky Derby party next month (never made one before) so will time my taste test in order to toast the gentleman and see what's happening with them! x

:-) This is lovely and I like the idea of the hen sitting on the little eggs.
Whatever the story behind - the brooch is very special and once again I really enjoyed your post!
A very HAPPY Sunday to you, dear Jill! xo :-)

Hiya Mom! Grace had lots of little treasures in her jewelry box, not just the big pieces! Glad we got to see a few of them in 2011 at that VCA exhibit. xx
