More Favorite Jewels at the 2016 Golden Globes (and Let’s Talk About Cate)

Jada Pinkett Smith at the 2016 Golden Globes.

Wouldn’t you know that as soon as I finished my last post about all the gems I loved at the 2016 Golden Globes I kept remembering other pieces I saw that night that I was crazy for as well? A search of Instagram turned up interesting tidbits too, so I decided to do a second post featuring even more jewels, just to share what I’ve learned!

Jada wore a sexy green Versace gown.

I thought Jada Pinkett Smitth looked so beautiful in her green Versace gown. I really liked that Grecian bodice on her since she is so tiny and the color was just perfect on her. She paired it with some seriously amazing jewelry. I didn’t quite catch all the pieces during the red carpet arrivals but when I saw that Van Cleef & Arpels featured her on their IG account I went hunting for photos!

The earrings are emerald, pearl and diamond, from the Van Cleef & Arpels Heritage collection. I wish more information was available but I couldn’t find anything else about the earrings from their website. They do go so wonderfully with the bodice of Jada’s gown!

A better shot of the earrings. They are stupendous! Jada’s makeup was wonderful too.

I hope Will Smith bought these earrings for Jada if she did not already own them. They are just magnificent and what an heirloom they would make for their daughter!

Now that’s a rock!

I flipped over this photo of Jada wearing a huge emerald-cut diamond ring, which I assume is a ring Will Smith gave her, perhaps her engagement ring, but I am not entirely clear on this and I don’t know which house made it. I love that she wore a nude manicure and just let the ring sing all by itself—no other jewelry, no dramatic nail color, nothing. And sing this ring does!

Emmy Rossum in Van Cleef & Arpels.

I thought Emmy Rossum struck just the right note pairing her red Armani Privé gown with a delicate criss-crossing of diamonds around her neck from Van Cleef & Arpels. This is the Thetis necklace from their Atlantide collection and Emmy paired it with a pair of diamond earrings, also VCA. I loved that this necklace did not overwhelm her since she is so young, just 29. I can’t help it, I keep hearing Ava Gardner’s words in my head about a woman looking tacky in diamonds before she’s 40. Despite Ava’s opinion on the matter, I think Emmy looks so good here because the necklace is not gigantic. I love it on her!

Such a great color on Queen Latifah!

I read that Queen Latifah was wearing a dress from her own collection. I really liked this color on her, as well as the embellished neckline. Of course, what caught my eye most were her stunning Lorraine Schwartz earrings. I love the amazing blue of the Paraiba tourmalines suspended above all those diamonds in handkerchief style!

The Lorraine Schwartz earrings went so well with the dress.

Bernadette Peters in Zac Posen.

Bernadette Peters was one of the first people I saw on the red carpet and I thought she looked divine! Does this woman ever age? She turns 68 next month and looks so good! I loved her Zac Posen gown, it really suited her frame in both cut and color, and I died over the ruby, emerald and diamond David Webb earrings. I don’t know what year they are from, but they are swoon-worthy! I can’t quite tell from the pictures, but those may be carved rubies and emeralds to boot. Let the weeping begin!

Bernadette in glorious David Webb earrings!

She completed her look with even more rubies, emeralds and diamonds, I assume also from David Webb, and a fantastic quilted black clutch with what looks like a jeweled clasp.

A beautiful bracelet and ring. The clutch is gorgeous too!

And now, let us talk about Cate Blanchett.

Cate Blanchett’s very complicated Golden Globes look.

On IG on Sunday I said I hoped to see archival pieces from the big jewelry houses at the Golden Globes. My wish came true but not in the way I expected.

Cate Blanchett wore earrings from the Tiffany & Co. archives that date back to 1915 of diamonds and pearls set in platinum. Absolutely stunning. Look at how gorgeous they are.

So in love with these 101-year-old Tiffany & Co. earrings!

But I tell you, I did not know what to make of the Givenchy creation she was wearing with them.

I think my mother’s text to me summed it up best: “There’s a lot going on with that dress.”

Cate is known for taking chances with her red carpet looks, which I appreciate, but I am not sure I am a fan of this one. It seemed so very complicated, from the gown to the hair to the extremely high heels. The jewelry was not complicated, nor was the makeup, and I loved what I saw of both in photos the next day. Unfortunately I felt the dress and hair completely overshadowed the jewelry. I could not even see the jewels on the red carpet for all the swinging of the gown and the strange shape of her hair!

Even the hair was complicated! Photo by Randy Shropshire.

Here is the hair from the side front. Photo by Ari Perilstein.

Look at the insane height of those heels!

The Tiffany & Co. bracelet can stay!

I definitely liked the color of the dress, since when the lights hit it it went from an icy pink to a shimmering soft white, which was amazing, but overall, this was not my favorite red carpet ensemble of hers. Maybe I can be persuaded to think of it as something other than a hot mess, which was my initial reaction of the whole look. In still photos I will admit it is growing on me!

In this photo I think I like the dress!

Let me know what you thought of the looks above, especially Cate’s!

Once again, all these terrific pictures are by Jason Merritt of Getty Images North America. Thank you Jason for your great work!

Bernadette still looks fab and hasn't changed in 40+ years. Cate is doing the Tilda Swinton androggy thing...attractive but asexual.

My dear GSL, I did not even think about Cate channeling Tilda, but I think you may be right! It was such a strange look on her and every time the cameras were on her during the program she did not look very happy or comfortable. Tilda always looks like she absolutely owns whatever look she has on, even if nobody else likes it, which I appreciate about her. Re Bernadette, she is as amazing as ever! xx PS How are book sales these days?

:-) Dear Jill,

as always: BEAUTIFUL! I love your choices!
Thanks for sharing all these details. We don't get to see these shows and red carpets here. Such a shame.

Have a very HAPPY weekend! xo :-)

I didn't hate Cate's dress, but it wasn't my favorite. The Fug Girls said the fringe in the back looked like a My Little Pony tail and now I can't un-see that. But, those earrings are fabulous!

The pink on Cate is a great color on her--the dress was a lot of, I'm not sure...but the jewelry--perfection! If the dress had been simple, the hair, the jewelry, and the towering heels cudda carried the look without any problem. Thanks for this great post, Jill, another very informative discussion!

I like Cate's look, it's different with an edge. She didn't disappoint, she's always ahead of the curve.

Hi Claudia, glad you enjoyed this roundup! xx

Hi Gracey! A My Little Pony tail! That is hilarious! My daughter went through a MLP phase so I have those figurines all over my house and now I can't unsee that description either. xx

Mom, is that you? I did like the color of the dress, the heels could've stayed, the jewelry of course, even the clutch, which I didn't like all that much, but the hair was just bizarre and the dress itself just had too much going on! xx

Hi Helen! I agree with you that Cate is always ahead of the curve but I don't know about this look. The only one of hers I liked even less was that lavender and yellow dress a few years ago, was that Givenchy too? xx

I want Bernadette's bracelet...do you think she would loan it, Jill! It is gorgeous!

Jill said...

Hi Pam, ha, Bernadette probably borrowed it from the David Webb archives! xx
