Favorite Jewels at the 2016 Golden Globes

Eva Longoria at the Golden Globes 2016.

There were so many looks to love at the Golden Globes on Sunday night! Trends that I noticed included either white dresses or dresses with a lot of deep color, plunging necklines (really plunging), and, my personal favorite, colored gemstones in the jewels! These ladies, in no particular order after Eva, were my top picks for the night. Like I did last year for the Globes, I am looking at the jewels first, then the gown in making my selections. Hope you had as much fun watching the show as I did!

My favorite look of the night was on Eva Longoria. I loved her very unusual Georges Hobeika dress—loved that it was white and featured a lot of colorful embroidery and beading around her neck and then at her waist and hips. I was also completely crazy for her magnificent ruby and diamond cluster earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Stunning! And they paired so well with her beautiful new ruby and diamond engagement ring. It appears that she is already wearing a pavĂ© eternity band with the ring. Look at the detailed photo below and you will see what I mean.

Love these Lorraine Schwartz earrings on Eva...

...as well as the beading on the dress which extended to the back.

Crazy for the diamond necklace on Jennifer!

I was not totally sold on Jennifer Lawrence in the Dior Haute Couture gown with cutouts. One minute I thought it was great, the next she would turn and the dress would look unflattering. However, I did love it paired with that amazing Chopard collar necklace which featured over 156 carats of diamonds set in white gold. Wowza!

A Dior dress of angles!

It looked different every time she moved.

I liked this Chopard ruby (not visible here) and diamond ring on her, with a neutral manicure. Very nice!

I thought Jaimie Alexander picked great colors with this emerald and black Genny dress but I hated the plunge neckline. Really hated it. It was too much plunge. I saw a lot of this plunge look on the red carpet and didn’t like any of it, to tell you the truth. I was in love with the emerald earrings Jamie wore, however, which are by Lorraine Schwartz. Jamie should wear emerald green all the time, it is so perfect with her coloring.

Helen Mirren. Photo by David Fisher.

Helen Mirren looked her usual alluring self. I normally despise black on the red carpet but I loved this look on her! I love the sheer shoulders on the dress, which paired beautifully with the Harry Winston diamond jewels and that saucy bob of hers. I think I have to include Helen in my Bob Hall of Fame since membership is forever ongoing and she wears hers so well!

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marc Jacobs and Neil Lane jewels.

This photo of Maggie Gyllenhaal does not do this dress justice because it was so gorgeously alive on screen! The dress is by Marc Jacobs and the jewelry was from Neil Lane. I really liked those earrings on Maggie.

Wonderful and unusual Neil Lane earrings on Maggie!

Love this silhouette on Lady Gaga!

Another look in black that I fell for was Lady Gaga’s velvet Atelier Versace dress. Its exaggerated hips remind me of the dramatic shaping Charles James would add to his gowns in the 1940s and 50s. Since she has become a jazz baby of late, with all her touring with Tony Bennett, this was a terrific choice for her.

Love the exaggerated hips on this dress. Very Charles James!

I also loved the drop-dead gorgeous Neil Lane diamond bracelets and earrings Gaga wore. I mean wow. They were the perfect compliment to her dress. I hope she has decided to channel Elizabeth Taylor and just buy them outright. She has the money to do it and she could get a lot of use out of them during her lifetime! I would really love to see a celebrity that wore and re-wore jewelry from their own collection, wouldn’t you? Something that we could admire on the same person over the years? Gaga, gift these to yourself, you need them in your jewelry box and we need to see you wear them from time to time!

A stunning Harry Winston diamond necklace on Jennifer Lopez.

My mother and I agreed that the color on the Giambattista Valli gown Jennifer Lopez wore was a tough color to pull off and did not look that great on her. I think if her hair was not so bleached out it would have made for a better contrast, but she is too blonde right now and her hair seemed to fade right into her gown. I did love the cape on the dress and that she wore it with a Harry Winston diamond necklace. Are those yellow diamonds I spy in her ears? Those can stay too!

Jane Fonda looked wonderful in Saint Laurent!

Jane Fonda looked so very good in her cream-colored Saint Laurent gown (those ruffles around her shoulders were perfection) and those absolutely amazing Chopard pearl and diamond earrings. Honestly, how old is this lady? 78? And she is still killing it on the red carpet? Love love love.

Gorgeous Chopard earrings on Jane!

Julianne Moore, beautiful in blue!

Julianne Moore looked like a vision in a shimmering blue sequin and velvet column dress. I am assuming it was by Tom Ford since he was her date and he dresses her for so many award shows, but let me know in the comments if I got it wrong. She wore the gown with Chopard jewels. Her dress reminds me so much of sequin “Mermaid” gowns by Norman Norell in the 1950 and 60s, except updated for today. This is such a great color on her!

Perfect Chopard earrings for a Tom Ford dress.

A detailed picture of the jewelry on Julianne Moore. That ring! From Chopard’s Instagram account.

I think Chopard was genius in showing photos on Instagram that gave detailed views of the jewelry worn by the celebrities. They were the only one of the big jewelry houses that did that, from what I saw on IG (though Van Cleef & Arpels and Tiffany & Co. had a few pictures as well), and what a difference it made. Just look at that great photo! Perfect advertising for the brand!

Let me know what you thought of these looks and do tell me about others that you either loved or loathed. I could have gone on here but this post would have been even bigger and I know you have to get on with your day!

Oh you liked the same ones I did...Helen Mirren's necklace caught my eye immediately. Nice choices...I enjoyed last night's fashions more than I have in a long time.

Hi Jill -

Lady Gaga killed it. That gown, jewels (especially)- even her hairstyle were retro in the very best way. Jennifer Lawrence's red gown was elevated from ok to great by the Chopard necklace. Eva Longoria def one of my favorites.

Jamie Alexander's gown was a beautiful forest green which complimented her coloring (have the same coloring & green is always a great color for me). As you said WAY too much cleavage. However, maybe it garnered the attention she wanted.

By far my favorite jewelry was Jane Fonda's pearl earrings. Luv Luv.

Jennifer Lopez's hair & makeup was way off & hair too light. That shade of yellow is difficult for most women.

As far as make-up, this seems to be the year of very long false eyelashes.

Thanks again for a great post.

Rosie

Hi Pam, I'm with you, that necklace on Helen Mirren was a show-stopper! She looked so good. I need to find out who designed her dress. It was wonderful. xx

Hi Rosie! I see we agreed on so many of the looks last night. Those earrings on Jane Fonda were just magnificent. I fell hard for Eva's earrings but Jane's were right up there for me too, I loved those over-sized pearls! I think you said it better than I did--Jennifer Lawrence's dress was definitely elevated by that Chopard necklace. It shimmered so beautifully when she was on stage. The plunge necklines were just making me crazy. I wanted to put modesty panels on Jamie Alexander as well as Kirsten Dunst. As far as the false eyelashes, I have been wearing them myself, only at night, and only at the outer corners. Your comment made me laugh, I know Eva goes in for that big (huge) lash line!

Wouldn't you know that as soon as I posted this I hunted around on IG and found even more jewels I want to talk about? Oh my. A second post is coming this week! xx

Hi Rosie, it's so bad, I have to stop looking at pictures or this second post is going to go on forever too! Hope to have it up in the next day or two. xx

My two favorites were Helen and Gaga--which I guess were similar actually: black dress, blond hair, and gorgeous diamonds, kinda classic looks for both young (Gaga) and err...mature (Helen). I loved the fabric of Jaime Alexander's gown and think it would've been a much more stunning look with a high neck in front to further highlight the texture of the fabric (maybe with the plunge in the back) and set off those gorgeous emerald earrings. Great post, Jill, beautiful choices to highlight.

Nice review on the gowns and jewels. I agree the plunging necklines just looked like lack of material. Somehow, it worked better on a Cosmo cover in the 1970's or on Grace Jones at Studio 54.

Hi Rena, glad to add this post to your link-up! xx

Mom is that you? I agree, a plunge in the back of Jaimie's dress would've been great. Helen and Gaga were two of my favorites of the night! xx

Hi Juliet! Ha, you got it 100% right--the plunge worked better on a 70s Cosmo cover. Where is Scavullo when we need him? xx
