I find it so ironic that Mar-a-Lago, the luxurious estate that Marjorie Merriweather Post built in the mid-1920s in Palm Beach, Florida, which she had bequeathed to the US government upon her death in 1973, with the hopes that it would used as the Winter White House, is now being used in exactly that capacity by President Trump, the first president to do so.
This isn’t a political post, but it is interesting to me that the wild turn of events that resulted in Donald Trump becoming President of the United States of America (I still can’t believe it, to tell you the truth), means that Post’s vision for Mar-a-Lago should come to fruition. Because presidents did not use it as the retreat Post intended, and because it was expensive to maintain, the government returned Mar-a-Lago to Post’s estate in 1980. Donald Trump purchased it in 1985 and opened it as a private club in 1995.

There is a great article by Mark Seal over at Vanity Fair about how Donald Trump came to be the owner of the historic property and I also found a fun post written in 2011 by Joan Gage of A Rolling Crone, describing what it was like to have lunch at Mar-a-Lago. Both articles are worth a read. By the way, Mar-a-Lago is Spanish for “Sea-to-Lake.”

I don’t know very much about MMP at this point so have no idea whether she would have liked Trump or not—the Vanity Fair article makes it sound like her three daughters definitely did not like him because of the way he purchased Mar-a-Lago—so if you think she is rolling in her grave that the Winter White House is inhabited by Trump and his family and administration, tell me in the comments. Please be nice and remember: I don’t care who you voted for! Let’s be friends, no matter who is in the White House.

Trump certainly appeared annoyed at the Red Cross Ball he hosted at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month, though Melania looked resplendent in hot pink Dior and a seriously amazing set of diamond and emerald earrings. Anybody out there know who made them? I hope she owns them but I could also see them being borrowed for the evening. MMP certainly liked to get out the big guns jewelry-wise for the Red Cross Ball too—I found this great photo of her from 1967 wearing her gigantic Van Cleef & Arpels turquoise and diamond tiara, along with a turquoise and diamond necklace and earrings! Wowza!

You know how much I love a fancy, gilded space so I have to say, I would not say no to a visit to Mar-a-Lago. If you know anyone who has a membership, tell them to invite ME!
