Adrienne of The Rich Life in Wine Country.
The wonderful month of October is finally here, with its promise of crisp, leaf-strewn days and cooler moon-filled nights. Adrienne of The Rich Life in Wine Country and I thought this would be the ideal occasion to devote a “How I Wear My” to the poncho or wrap!
This wardrobe staple is so versatile and can be elegant and sophisticated or funky and fun, depending on how you style it, and seems like such a great way to welcome the delights fall has to offer. I hope you get a chance to revel in them all before the temperatures really begin to drop. Enjoy!
Adrienne of The Rich Life in Wine Country, above, my lovely “How I Wear My” partner, writes, “I love the look and the simplicity of ponchos. I own several and gravitate toward them when the weather allows. It’s such an easy wardrobe item to style. Here I’m wearing a heather gray cashmere blend poncho from Mason Street Designs, available at Shop The Rich Life. I decided to go for a light neutral look and wore my poncho with ivory Define Yourself Ankle Pants by Stella Carakasi, a nude camisole, druzy pendant necklace by Janet Harrer Jewelry Designs, Kate Spade bag and nude pumps. This is an outfit I would wear as we transition into cooler days.”
I really like this entire ensemble on Adrienne, from the detailing on the poncho and pants, to the jewelry, pumps, and bag. I especially love that she chose pale neutrals to make the change from late summer to early fall. She looks so polished and beautiful!
Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life.
Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life says, “I love how throwing this Ann Taylor Cashmere poncho instantly makes me feel dressed up. The soft texture makes it so comfy.”
This may be my new favorite picture of Alice, she looks so glamorous in this dynamite combination of dusty rose pink poncho over a black and white dress and a pair of seriously sexy strappy black heels!
Nora of Jacket Society.
Nora of Jacket Society says, “I am wearing our brand new reversible wraps which come in two color ways, houndstooth/pink and houndstooth/black. Both are available on our website. I am wearing them with my slim cropped BCBG pants and BCBG print top, Chanel bag and D&G pumps.”
I am crazy for houndstooth anyway, so to pair it with hot pink, one of my favorite colors this time of year, makes it extra special for me. And you know I can never say no to a Chanel bag. Love this look on Nora! If you want this wrap, hurry over to see Nora, she says they are going fast!
Ana of Mrs. American Made.
Ana of Mrs. American Made writes, “I have a lovely brown tweed #madeinUSA cape by Trina Turk that I like to wear in both Fall and Winter. In the Fall I like to wear it as the focal piece of a simple all black and neutral outfit like this, with short black booties and a classic leather satchel.”
I am a big fan of this elegant and classic look on Ana. Can’t you just see her in this as she strolls in Central Park against a backdrop of the leaves in their gorgeous shades of orange and yellow? Ana, quick, get on a plane and get to the city, it needs you to walk along its streets and parks in this ensemble!
I love this modern and ladylike glamour on Ana.
Beth of Tall Fashion Adventures.
Beth of Tall Fashion Adventures says, “I recently bought this cozy ruana wrap and, to be honest, am still figuring out how to wear it since it’s a bit out of my comfort zone. I wore it for the first time on a recent trip to Paris with black jeans, a blue top and neutral flats. My next mission is to wear it with a belt!”
I’d say Beth looks completely in her comfort zone, looking so chic in Paris in her wrap, which she paired beautifully with blue, and with the Eiffel Tower behind her. J’adore!
Catherine of Not Dressed As Lamb.
Catherine of Not Dressed As Lamb says, “My cashmere poncho is a really practical design as well as being gorgeous to the touch - it has ribbed sleeves so it’s like wearing a huge sweater... it hangs beautifully, and no cold arms.”
This is such a beautiful shade on Catherine, it looks amazing on her! I love that she paired it with a leopard fedora. Autumnal perfection!
Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust.
Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust writes, “I have several wraps that I wear once the temperatures cool down, but this one is in constant rotation. The simplicity of it makes it work with just about everything, and it’s like being wrapped in a soft cozy blanket!”
I really like this look on Debbie. Since I was a military brat as a child I am practically allergic to anything camouflage, but I have to say Debbie makes it looks so good, I love the color and visual interest it provides to this ensemble!
Merci of Chic on Thrift.
Merci of Chic on Thrift writes, “What I like about this poncho is that I can wear it even in summer. Very airy and actually it’s not suitable for any cool weather, the frills make it more of a statement piece in an outfit.”
I love the open weave of this poncho, as well as its fringe and floral embellishment. I especially like that Merci wore it with sky blue pants, which help highlight the fringe, and square-toed shoes that almost seem Edwardian. An unexpected and interesting look!
Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun.
Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun says, “The black poncho I’ve had for years and it’s so cozy and cool that I just never can give it up.”
Dawn Lucy has totally gone the boho route with this mix of dark denim, black poncho with fringe, platform shoes, and a bag that features fringe and studs. This is so her! I love this outfit on Dawn Lucy and that she always stays true to her favorite look.
Yvonne of FunkyForty.
Yvonne of FunkyForty is wearing her favorite cashmere hooded wrap. She says, “I love this wrap so much, as it is so soft and keeps me warm - sometimes I wear it simply over trousers and a T-shirt and other times I funk it up by actually wearing a jacket over it - I like that sort of casual fun look.”
What a great wrap on Yvonne. I like the length, the fringe, the hood, and especially the pale gray color.
I love the back of this wrap and that it has a hood.
Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo.
The ever-crafty Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo is wearing a kimono that she wears as a wrap, and one she made changes to, adding velvet ribbon, tassels and pompoms. I love it! I also love that she is wearing a mix of patterns and is carrying a fringe bag.
What a great mix of patterns on Suzanne.
Trina of Tea Time With Trina.
Trina of Tea Time With Trina says of her outfit, “I belted the wrap to make it more of a shawl or vest. I love wearing it this way because it stays put and just adds another dimension and to this fall attire.”
I love that Trina’s outfit is drenched with color that is perfect for early October. I also like the jaunty feel of her cloche, which seems like Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby updated for today!
Our new friend Betty writes, “A wrap adds a bit of panache to any outfit, and is a wonderful alternative to a sweater or jacket when the weather or air conditioning is too chilly for bare arms. In addition, many of us have less than perfect upper arms, and I have found that a pretty wrap provides just the coverage I need. My daughter showed me how to use the long white wrap, which is draped over the shoulders and then passed under the arms and tied in the back.”
I never get tired of black and white so I really like this evening ensemble on Betty, especially the fact that the wrap is fastened in the back, with the fringe providing a fun and flirty touch.
The back of the wrap. Love the fringe!
Cheryl of Northwest Mountain Living.
Cheryl of Northwest Mountain Living says, “I am wearing a black long-sleeved top, and a black turtleneck poncho, black belt, jeans and suede booties. A necklace and earrings with a little sparkle completed my outfit. This is a classic look that never goes out of style for me.”
I really like this classic style on Cheryl, and I especially appreciate that she glammed it up with some jewelry!
Shelbee of Shelbee On The Edge.
Shelbee of Shelbee On The Edge writes, “I styled my favorite red cape with dark-wash skinny jeans, sandals, and a black tunic with a tiny white fleur-de-lis print all over it. I purchased this cape at least a decade ago and it makes its rounds into my outfit rotations every year or so. I don’t even remember where I bought the cape, but I love it with just about any outfit on a rainy day. And it is probably my husband’s favorite piece in my entire wardrobe. So not really a poncho or a wrap, but the classic predecessor of both!”
I love this rich red on Shelbee, it really suits her, and I like that she pulls this out to wear on rainy days. I bet it makes everyone who sees her smile. I know I always love to see a lady wearing a bright color on a dreary day!
Linda of A Labour of Life.
Linda of A Labour of Life says of her poncho, “This is the perfect Transition Piece, wearing my Forever 21 Poncho over a LBD I found this summer at Banana Republic. I added some tights and a pair of boots (from GH Bass) and I am set to go no matter the temperature. I also added my merlot Coach bag as a spot of colour.”
This is the the kind of ladylike ensemble I love! I like that Linda is carrying a wine-colored tote and added a long multi-layered necklace to her look.
Malia of Style by Malia.
Malia of Style by Malia writes, “Ponchos are a staple in my fall wardrobe. I love to wear them as a stand-alone item or as a good alternative to a coat. This black and white turtleneck poncho was a must-have the moment I saw it at Target. It is from the Ava and Viv line. I paired it with my ponte knit INC leggings and classic Clark boots, while adding a final pop of color from my multi-strand leather necklace I picked up at Nordstrom. This look is perfect for any day of the week.”
I love this big plaid check on Malia. I also like that she paired it with leggings, tall boots, and her gorgeous smile!
I admired this poncho on a friend of mine at school pickup one day last fall. She told me she got it in a shop in Queens and offered to get one for me. When I heard the price—just $15!—I could not resist! I was especially happy when she handed it to me the next day, telling me it was the very last one available.
Detailed shot of the texture and the bag.
I love the fringe, as well as the diamond-shaped nubby texture over the entire garment. This poncho is so soft and cozy and I will be wearing it all autumn long, both indoors and out! I paired it here with Old Navy white jeans, black ankle boots, and my Hermès Jigé in Rouge Vif box calf (secondhand and vintage!), one of my favorite bags.
I hope you (and your wrap) are having a wonderful start to your fall season!
