Who’s Afraid of Red Lipstick?

Photo from Harper’s Bazaar.

I have had that old beauty classic—red lipstick—on my mind for a few weeks. I have never been that into lipstick, I usually prefer a gloss if I’m going to wear anything on my lips at all, but after seeing Linda Rodin in a picture that accompanies a recent interview she gave to Into the Gloss (on aging, definitely worth a read), wearing her bright red lipstick, as well as a very pretty girl over at Garance Doré’s wearing a mix of two red lipsticks, I’m wondering if I need to rethink my stance on it.

Love this photo of Linda Rodin with her pooch. By Tom Newton.

I usually go for a smoky eyeliner in a neutral color like dark taupe over a big dramatic lip color, plus it drives me crazy that lipstick will fade over time, or migrate and possibly end up on your teeth. I feel that when you wear red lipstick you have committed yourself to checking on it frequently! Also, I’m not convinced I look that good in red lipstick. It obviously draws so much attention to the mouth, to the teeth too, and I’d rather have the feature that stands out the most to be my eyes, which I think can take the scrutiny!

That being said, I recently attended a really wild show in Manhattan called Fuerza Bruta: Wayra, as a chaperone for my son’s 7th grade dance classes. A reviewer described it as ‘a circus on acid’ and I would agree with that assessment. Most of the female performers wore red lipstick, bright cherry red, and I would love to know what brand they used because those gals were crawling through a gigantic pool of water above the audiences’ heads (it really is a crazy show) and whatever formula they wore had to be super waterproof and long-lasting. Any thoughts on who makes such a formula? MAC maybe?

Female performers at Fuerza Bruta: Wayra. Red lipstick that stayed put! (Their dresses sure didn't.)

Chanel Lune Rousse, left, L’Oreal Candy Apple, right.

My go-to red lipstick is Chanel Rouge Coco in Lune Rousse. I like the deep shade of it and the fact that it has no shimmer at all. I can wear it alone or use it like a stain and put my absolute favorite red lip-gloss, L’Oreal’s Colourjuice in Candy Apple, over it, which is what I do most often. Hardly ever during the day, however, only at night!

These are what I reach for when I go red!

Do you wear red lipstick? During the day, at night, or both? If you have a favorite brand or shade, let me know what it is!

I recently got a darker YSL shade and I am trying to step out of my comfort zone and wear it more often. Enjoyed the post, Jill!

Funny you should mention...I've been experimenting with "daytime reds" which for me mean a sheer, warm red. Linda Rodin has been one of my inspirations to focus on lips. Since I wear glasses, it sort of makes sense as my eyes aren't as visible. I do love Chanel's "Incandescente" but it definitely pops and I have to really be ready to be visible. Just picked up a sheer red from By Terry which I'm liking called "Bang Bang." A lot of the matte lipsticks really dry out my lips, so I'm always looking for something with more of a "satin" texture that's in between matte and shiny.

Hi Pam, YSL makes some great shades, I would love to know which color and which formula you are using! XO, Jill

Hi Deja, now I want to see both of those colors you mentioned, especially the By Terry shade! I'm with you, would love to find a daytime red, sheer would be good, because the red I have now seems too deep for day. I wish I knew what Linda Rodin was wearing in that picture above, it's a great orangey-red! XO, Jill

It used to vex me Jill but now Ms. Ling knows just how to remove those stubborn stains and freshly launder those shirts for their next assignment.

GSL, you bad boy you. Why am I not surprised that your experience with red lipstick includes finding someone who knows how to remove those tell-tale stains from the collars of your shirts! Between this and your funny post on a lady you said you'd like to meet under the Christmas mistletoe, I expect to find a post on your site one day about the duel you may be forced to fight very soon! Ha. XO, Jill

I rotate between the following 3:
Shiseido lacquer rouge in Drama (true red);
Dior Diorific lipstick in Lady (2012 Holiday Grand Bal collection, soft wearable red); &
Dior Rouge Dior in Action Red (orangey-red).

I use a clear lip liner (Dior) to prevent the color from bleeding or feathering.

Hi Helen, thank you for listing both brands, formulas, and shades, I want to check them all out, especially the Dior! I think a trip to Sephora is in order...XO, Jill

Hi Jill,
I wear red lipstick in the evening - usually Laura Mercier's Mistress, which unfortunately has been discontinued. I was always told that you should either emphasize the eyes OR the lips. Don't know if I hold firmly to that belief any longer. Particularly for the evening.

The 60's was all about big eyes, with lots of shadow & lots of lashes & nude lips. The 40's was about face powder & matte red lipstick. The 70's makeup was just plain crazy - way too much blush.

Yes to red lipstick! Though I don't always love it. I think it's making a big comeback, right? I do have a favorite color … it's Cllinique and I can't remember the name. Darn it.

Hi Rosie! Oh I hate it when brands discontinue colors that you love. I bought a back-up of my favorite Chanel lipstick, one of the sheer ones, because they stopped making a great shade called Cavaliere, darn it all! I LOVE your insight into makeup trends over the years and I think I agree with you--I did a smoky eye, false eyelashes AND a red lip when I went to look at the holiday windows on Saturday. It looked pretty good to me! XO, Jill

Hi Dawn Lucy, maybe you are right, maybe there is more talk about it, more images of it, and that's why I have red lipstick on the brain. If you remember the shade you like, let me know, I have quite the list going at this point of shades I want to check out! XO, Jill

The most dramatic red I have is Flirt Alert by Benefit. I find it has some staying power, too. It leaves a bit of a stain after I've been wearing it a while.

Hi Aya! Oh good, I'm writing that one down too, I have several Benefit products and I like them all so I will definitely check out this color! XO, Jill

I thought of something to add ... the other almost red color I really like is Clinique Spiced Apple!

Hi again Dawn Lucy, thank you for telling me those color names, I am going to be spending some time at the Clinique section when I get to Sephora! XO, Jill
