How I Wear My: Sneakers

Adrienne of The Rich Life (on a budget).

Is it just us or are sneakers everywhere these days? With features in magazines and in street style photography at different fashion weeks around the world, and with retailers offering so many different patterns, colors, and styles, sneakers have never been hotter! Adrienne of The Rich Life (on a budget) and I knew that for this month’s “How I Wear My,” sneakers would be a natural.

What I love about this particular roundup is seeing how the addition of sneakers can either edge up a look, or make it more casual, playful, and fun. Enjoy!

Adrienne of The Rich Life (on a budget), above, my gorgeous “How I Wear My” partner, is wearing a great pair of Superga sneakers, Gap destroyed white boyfriend jeans, a Rolling Stones tank, and a Theory jacket. I think this is such a perfect casual look on her!

Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun.

Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun wrote, “This is a casual, fun look for spring… same striped skirt as last month, but this time with burgundy Converse sneakers, a black tank, and burgundy cardigan.”

I love this combination of colors on Dawn Lucy, don’t you?

Sheree of It’s Not That Deep.

The ever-stylish Sheree of It’s Not That Deep looks beyond New York cool with her distressed Asos denim skirt, vintage sequined jacket (love!), aviators, and black Nike trainers.

Terry of Terry’s Two Cents.

Terry of Terry’s Two Cents shows us great pattern mixing with his striped sweater and plaid slip-on sneakers. I think the blue sunglasses make the whole outfit pop!

Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life.

Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life is wearing a pair of Gap sneakers. I always forget they sell shoes! She called her look, “an easy weekend outfit, and I thought the spots on the scarf mirrored the leopard spots on my sneakers.”

I do love a mix of patterns so I am a fan of Alice’s look. I would wear this myself!

Trina of Tea Time With Trina.

Trina of Tea Time With Trina said, “This kind of dress and sneakers, at least for me, will be perfect for most of my summer day and night activities.”

I love the fresh and energetic feel of Trina’s look with sneakers.

Cynthia of My Rose Colored Shades.

Cynthia of My Rose Colored Shades looks so ready for summer in these cool pale colors with her sneakers. And after seeing both her and Terry, above, in blue shades, now I want a pair!

Josephine of Chic At Any Age.

Josephine of Chic At Any Age proves you can kick a casual outfit up a notch just by adding a hat, gray sneakers, and a smile!

Natalia of In the Writer’s Closet.

Natalia of In the Writer’s Closet says she wears sneakers with both pants and jeans and skirts and dresses and just loves them. I really like Natalia’s pairing of sneakers with a long black dress, jacket and, scarf. I have to try this look myself this summer!

Bella of The Citizen Rosebud.

If this picture of Bella of The Citizen Rosebud looks familiar to you it’s because she sent it along for our roundup “How I Wear My: Jeans.” I couldn’t resist using it again because I love Bella’s leopard-print slip-on sneakers.

Silk Path Diary.

Silk Path Diary admits that she doesn’t wear sneakers often and these are the only pair she does wear. This look is very similar to what I wear for doing all my chores!

A great collage from Tamera of Tamera Beardsley.

Tamera of Tamera Beardsley wrote, “I realize now, after having these brand new white Superga sneakers in my closet for over a year now, I am not really a tennis shoe wearing gal. This really surprised me because I love this trend on others, and I have even learned to embrace Birkenstocks, but wearing sneakers for street wear is just not my first choice. I think part of the reason is I seem to spend half my day in workout wear and athletic shoes. The sneakers do work very well though, to change into when walking the harbor after a dinner out in heels … or when I'm set off to investigate a new local spot.”

I think Tamera brings up a great point: Some people just don’t like sneakers because they associate them with gym or workout time and as soon as that time is over they want those sneakers off, pronto!

Madeco of Au fil des jours.

Madeco of Au fil des jours, who lives in Normandy, has a special connection to her favorite sneakers, by Coach:

“I bought them when we were in Los Angeles during holidays in 2012. It was my last buy at Ross Dress for Less, near the Farmers’ Market, before going to LAX to take a plane back to Paris. I love them for two reasons: They were a bargain and so a good memory!”

Her very fun T-shirt is one she inherited from her son, who it no longer fits. I really like Madeco’s lighthearted sneaker style!

A detailed shot of Madeco’s Coach sneakers. I love that pop of pink!

Malia of Style by Malia.

Malia of Style by Malia is a fan of Coach sneakers just like Madeco above and she paired hers with a pair of rolled up jeans and a purple striped tank, both by Torrid. She and Madeco have both convinced me to give Coach sneakers a closer look next time I get a chance!

Tracy of Peacock-Style.

Tracy of Peacock-Style said, "I still wear my sneakers like the 80s when it was the fashion to tuck your laces behind the tab of your sneakers. I think it offers a cleaner and more polished look.”

I never lived in a place where we tucked our laces behind the tab of the sneakers but I am so with Tracy—it is definitely a cleaner and more polished look. I like the range of styles she is showing here and I never get tired of neon pink.

Sneakers: part of my everyday life! In Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Photo by G. Keresty.

During the week with all the chores I have to do (and no car), I live in sneakers. I discovered these slip-on sneakers with no laces by Skechers a few years ago and I just buy a new pair when they need to be replaced since this style is a classic for them. Skechers offers the shoe in several colors but the off-white is my favorite. They are comfortable and sturdy and I can walk forever in them with no blisters. This particular style is called “Dream Come True” which just makes me laugh. Actually my Dream Come True would be to have a car and driver and be able to click-clack around Manhattan and Brooklyn in a pair of Manolo Blahnik black patent Mary Janes all day long with no worry about walking anywhere for any great length of time, but until that happens I guess these Skechers will have to do.

I so love a lion since I am a Leo! Photo by G. Keresty.

My fearless photographer GK took these pictures of me in Prospect Park. It was a breezy day so I was glad for my silk chiffon stole by Anne Touraine Paris. I love this scarf more and more every time I wear it and it does pair so nicely with sneakers!

Are sneakers a go-to for you like they are for me or do you wear them sparingly like Tamera and Silk Path Diary?

Easter may be over but we still have those beautiful pale colors on our mind. Pale blue, yellow, mint, baby pink, lavender. We can’t get enough! If you are still thinking about them too join us in June for “How I Wear My: Pastels.” All shades welcome! Send pictures of your looks to by June 2, 2014.

Do stop by Adrienne’s to see even more fun looks featuring sneakers.

And thank you to all the fine foxes who participated this month!

Such a fun and relaxed post this month. Even putting it together was a breeze (as you well know, that is not always the case!).
I am crossing my fingers that the sneaker style stay current for a long time to come. It's fun, comfortable, sporty and youthful.
Thanks for another great HIWM! Can you believe it's our 31st?
By the way, you look very chic in your sneaker look. And I have to mention Tracey of Peacock Style for delivering three great looks with the same shoes AND a terrific graphic!

Such fun looks, and sneakers were *everywhere* in Paris too. I love how they add a bit of insouciance to outfits.

Great post, Jill!! I absolutely love the comfort of sneakers, and am so glad that they are now being made in such great colors and styles. I'm going to add a few more sneaker styles to my closet and get away from the gym/athletic shoe frame of mind! Thank you for this great post!

Jill, look at all these fun and creative ways to wear sneakers. What a fun filled post. Can't wait to try some of these ideas.
By the way, I think your walking lifestyle sounds so much more rewarding and healthy than having a driver. Love seeing you in the park and how you are so down to earth.

Thank you so much for another fun round-up, Jill! I love seeing all the different styles of sneakers and all the different ways these gorgeous ladies wear them all in one place (well, in two places actually). :)

Love your styling with the striped top and the scarf - you do look a bit dreamy there! I can see you in Paris walking in this relaxed outfit! :)

Thank you for all your work, it's just wonderful!

Everyone looks wonderful! I am sorry I missed this, but I just don't do sneakers outside of working out. I'm more of a flats girl, I guess.

This was a tough one for me since I am much happier in a pair of heels, but sneakers are indeed fun and casual. I love your very French look, Jill, and always thank you and Adrienne for putting these together. I always look forward to seeing the looks that everyone shares. Thank you, : ) Ana
