Shopping Ban Update

2013 Purchases. Hey, not bad!

I’ve been good and I’ve been bad.

Good because I’ve controlled my spending fairly well the first four months of 2013. I did buy a pair of jeans, which were badly needed to replace a pair that were starting to fall apart. I also bought mascara, though now I wish I would’ve stepped way up and bought Chanel mascara because this L’Oreal Paris Voluminous is easily the worst mascara I have ever used. It clumps, it flakes, it comes out in globs on the wand. I will never buy it again. I’m a little surprised that this is a L’Oreal product.

Did I just get a bad tube? This is the worst mascara I’ve ever used.

Shirts by J. Crew. I think I have all I need for summer!

As for how I’ve been bad, I broke down and bought two J. Crew shirts on sale recently, both for summer wear, one in stripes and flowers, one in navy blue linen. The linen shirt is the most comfortable button-down shirt I have put on in a long time. It’s as comfortable as a T-shirt! My other two unplanned purchases, which I wrote about in an earlier post, were the leopard clutch from Sheree of It’s Not That Deep (I love that clutch, I use it whenever I go out) and butter LONDON polish in Queen Vic, which I wore to the PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibit since it looks so good against black.

butter LONDON polish in Queen Vic.

All total, less than $100. It’s a Christmas miracle in May!

How are your New Year’s Resolutions going now that we are in the fifth month of the year?

Sucks about the mascara!! I always hate it when I buy something less expensive and it turns out it's cheap for a reason... 'Cause it sucks!

Congratulations on braving the temptations! You are sooooo goooooood!!
Be careful about CHANEL INIMITABLE VOLUME MASCARA - there was just a test on mascaras in a German language ecological test magazine and this one was rated as "should not be allowed on the market", because there something cancer causing in there, "Nitrosamine" and parabenes.
Take care and have a wonderful week :-) xo

Your restraint is amazing!
I woud shoot off an email to L'Oreal and let them know mention the tube number etc and see if they respond. They may send you a different tube or suggest a different L'Oreal mascara...it's feedback the comapny needs to hear about so they can fix the problem.

Well done! So many of us buy waaaaay too much unnecessary stuff. The purchases you've made all look fabulous and will last a long time. Maggie Alderson has a wonderful post on her blog about fashion and consumerism. The comments it has attracted are brilliant, too - so much food for thought!
As far as mascara goes - I have tried the Chanel one and it didn't work at all for me. What does (and I have used for about 5 years) is the Maybelline "Soft and Full" Mascara (I use the waterproof version). It never clumps, is buildable, lasts well, is easy to remove with waterproof eye make-up remover and holds a curl well - brilliant stuff. I have sensitive eyes and wear soft contact lenses and it is the only one I have tried that I can use. Highly recommended - and it's inexpensive and available at the supermarket! x Caroline

Holy cats you are disciplined. I've slashed my monthly spending average by 2/3....but you set a new standard!

It seems like drugstore mascaras are going down hill. I received a sample of Dior Extase and it lasted a whole week with great performance all around. I'm tempted to buy a full-sized tube.

I am in awe. I like how well-thought out your small selection of purchases are, too.

I am completely impressed with your resolve...well done. I also like your new header!

I used to use L'Oreal Voluminous mascara all the time...never had clumps. However, I stopped using it once I realized it was leaving dark shadows under my eyes--NOT my eyeliner. I now use Mary Kay's Lash Love--it is incredible.

Thanks ladies, for all the kind comments, and especially for the recommendations on mascara. I have made a list of new ones to try based on everything written here! XO, Jill

Your thoughtful purchases are lovely!

I used Voluminous as a teen and remember it being an excellent mascara. I'm not sure if the formula changed, but I tried it again a year or so ago and also found it to be a horrible mascara. A make-up artist turned me on to Trish McEvoy's Lash Curling mascara after I complained to him about all my old faithfuls now giving me raccoon eyes. The TM is $$$ but so, so good!

Hi Lucy, thanks for the input re mascara, it's good to know I'm not the only one who's been dissatisfied with the Voluminous mascara. It's surprising because normally I love every L'Oreal product I try. I had forgotten about Trish McEvoy's mascara, I've read good things about it before and after your endorsement of it, I think it just went to the top of my list! XO, Jill

I salute you - that's amazing self control! I've been able to make a trial size Lancome masacra last forever due to tiny lashes but it's unbelievably good, no smudging or clumpiness and honestly if they work on me, they'd work on anyone.
I have been shopping *sigh* the only defence I have is that they were foundation and replacement pieces and as for the H, well I have NO excuses oops!
