Essie’s 30-Year-Old Ballet Slippers

Ballet Slippers by Essie.

I recently read a great Into the Gloss interview with Essie Weingarten, founder of Essie nail polish. I am a big fan of Essie, both the lady and the company, and the interview is a great window into how Essie founded her business, her own manicure rituals, and favorite colors. If you have five to ten minutes, I highly recommend it!

I thought it was especially interesting to learn Ballet Slippers is a shade that is nearly 30 years old and one that Ms. Weingarten claims is as important as the name “Essie” to the company. It has been one of my favorite neutral shades for over 15 years and I happen to have a new bottle of it in my current line-up of Essie shades.

A chorus line of Essie polishes.

The colors above, left to right, are Ballet Slippers, Mademoiselle, Curtain Call, Limo-Scene, Limited Addiction, Berry Hard, and Velvet Voyeur. Regarding the polish names Essie says in the interview, “I learned that if you give things names that women appreciate and adore, they’re going to remember it.” And she’s right, I love all the names above.

I plan on wearing a lot of Ballet Slippers, Berry Hard, and Velvet Voyeur this fall. Do you have a favorite shade of Essie? Do tell me what it is so I can check it out!

My favorite is Delicacy, a sheer light pink (similar to Ballet Slippers) with a very delicate opalescence to it. One coat is the perfect sheer neutral.

I cannot remember the name of the color, but my favorite Essie color is a beautiful light mint green which came out last summer. I love it...but I think I will pick up a bottle of Ballet Slippers. Good Post!

Essie right about names selling it to us. As a former ballet dancer I need a nail polish called "ballet slippers" in my life! There was one that OPI did that was the perfect ballet pink which they called Barre Work or something similiar but a was a limited edition that they discontinued it before I could get my hands on it. I'll have to see if I can find Essie in the UK!

love the colours, luff the names but I find it a bit...watery. But I might go and change my polish to a deep red after seeing this line up arrangement.

Ballet Slippers is a favorite! I've been through multiple bottles of it. I also like Mademoiselle and Allure.

For years Chanel's "Flamme Rose" was my favorite. I don't know how many bottles I went through. Then I found Essie and her endless colours. It was extremely hard to find a new soft pink. But I got a tad more daring ... I found "Vanity Fairest" with a tiny bit of sparkle in it. I love it! And I love the brush - the polish goes on so perfectly. I trust I will find some very nice fall/winter colors :-)

A beautiful array!

My favorite Essie shade is Peach Daiquiri. It's a soft neon salmon, if that makes sense. I read the same interview and was inspired to purchase Wicked for this fall.

I've never tried Essie polish before...but I have been looking for the perfect color in a polish that lasts. My nails are as durable as they should be so I'm looking for a color that is pale and neutral. I really like 'Ballet Slippers'; I may check it out!

My favorite Essie polish is called "natural". It's just that, the perfect sheer beigy skin color that blends into my skin tone. I love it. Essie is a great polish too. It takes a while to chip and is easy to apply.

Hi Heather, how are you? I am adding that shade to my Essie list, I really have grown to love nude nails so now I want to see the shade you mentioned! XO, Jill
