How I Wear My: Statement Necklace

For this month’s “How I Wear My” post, it’s high glamour time. Adrienne of The Rich Life (on a budget) and I are loving our statement necklaces.

When I first stared wearing my statement necklaces to my holiday job at Bloomingdale’s, I felt very self-conscious, since my favorite one, from J. Crew, is so big and green-gold glittery.

Well.

Plenty of the ladies who work there wore necklaces even bigger than mine (which I call the Anna in honor of Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of Vogue, whose gemstone collet necklaces I adore).

This J. Crew necklace subtly changes colors in different lighting, which I love.

With a strict dress code of all black at Bloomingdale’s (although white shirts are permitted), a statement necklace is the only way you can bring color to your work outfit. So I got over my self-consciousness and started wearing every big necklace I own.

Another necklace I love is a recent purchase from eBay—half mother-of-pearl and black jet, half diamante, from the 1950s. I bought it from a vintage jewelry dealer in the north of England, which just enhances the romance for me. When I wear either one of these necklaces, I keep everything else pretty simple—black long-sleeved crewneck T-shirt, black cardigan, black jacket. I want to keep the focus on the necklace.

I never get tired of black and white.

Please do head over to The Rich Life (on a budget) to see how Adrienne and others wear their statement necklaces. I hope it inspires you to wear the biggest necklace you own today.

In February, the month of Valentines and love, we are going to tip our sartorial hats to that most romantic of fabrics—lace. It doesn’t have to be just bridal or boudoir. So get creative with lace, send Adrienne or me a picture of you wearing it, and we’ll include you in our “How I Wear My: Lace” post on February 1!

Your necklaces have such subtle glamour. Unlike some statement necklaces, they are both very wearable and can be dressed up or down. I can't decide which one I like more they are both so lovely!

I'm having such a blast with our How I Wear My posts. I'm already excited about February's "Lace" post...

xoxo, Adrienne

Ooh I do like that Anna necklace and funny thing is that I thought of Wintour immediately when I saw the image before I read the text!

They really make a difference adding just a little bit of eye candy.

Love your looks. Both necklaces are timeless and look very classic with your outfits. Thanks for sharing!

I love statement necklaces and certainly don't have enough of them! That vintage piece is gorgeous, and I love the story behind it. I think my favorite that I have is a slightly epic wooden bib number that I surprisingly wear all the time; my sister bought in when we were vacationing in Florida ages ago and decided she'd never wear it, so I snatched it up!

I must say that I never quite noticed your eyes until I was at Adrienne's reading the compilation of all these posts. Perhaps the eyes are a side-effect of the necklaces, but your eyes are sexy and sparkly. Beautiful.

I'm right there with you...I NEVER tire of black and white. It's always elegant and always classic! I find that my statement necklaces need to be longer. I love the shorter ones (like you have on) and they're beautiful, but I almost feel claustrophobic! I agree with Terri, your eyes just really stand out...like the necklaces are footlights to your face's stage (does that make sense?) Hugs to you! I can't wait to see where this year takes you and your blog! Hugs! ~Serene

Both necklaces are beautiful, but I prefer the black and white with the lower neckline.
Read your previous post, don't be hard on yourself. I looked back at photos of myself 20 and 30 years ago (I am 71) and wondered why I was so obsessed with my thoughts of being not thin enough, not pretty enough, not dresses as if I fell out of a fashion show - I looked great - just wish I had realized it then and enjoyed my 'middle-aged' self.

I dont think I could work at bloomies being limited to B&W!

Love your necklaces, and you are just so chic, GF!

Hi Patti, thanks for the compliment, I have been getting so much use out of my necklaces all of a sudden. It seemed for awhile they would never make it out of the house again!

Hi Hostess! I have to get over to your blog to see what you are doing. I am a big fan of Anna Wintour's style, very elegant with unexpected touches and lots of glamour.

Hi Casee Marie! I love that you took over your sister's wooden bib necklace. I would love to see it. Have you featured it on your blog? When are you coming to the city again so we can meet up and have fun?

Terri, oh my God, that is the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a long time! Thank you for the compliment! I hope you will join us next month for the lace post. XO, Jill

No reason to be self-conscious - both those necklaces are beautiful! I've been wanting to find the perfect chunky necklace. I'll have to check out J. Crew.

Serene my dear, I painted my nails red the other night in honor of you and you are right, red really is the best! I hope you will join us for the lace post. And thank you for the nice compliment! XO, Jill

Hi Peg, thank you for stopping by and thank you for such great insights and advice. I really don't feel comfortable in front of a camera and I think it shows in about 90% of the pictures I am in. I am trying to relax about it but it's not so easy. I much prefer being behind the camera photographing beautiful clothes! XO, Jill

Hiya Paula, I understood why so many ladies wore wildly colored scarves and necklaces at Bloomingdale's, just to bring some life to all black attire. I quickly joined them! I hope you will join us for the lace post next month and thank you for nice compliment! XO, Jill

Hi Marissa, how are you? I really like J. Crew's jewelry line, they change it up every season and produce some beautiful pieces at reasonable prices. Happy 2012 to you! XO, Jill

Love this post, and your statement necklaces are wonderful! Since I make and sell chunky necklaces, it is a great reason for me to be able to wear one every day! People always ask me where they can wear one, and my answer is always, "why not just to the grocery store!?" I believe that you should dress up and wear what makes you happy every day!

Hi Sarah, Happy New Year, I miss you! I need to come to your blog to see what you are making! I'm so with you, I think it's time for me to bust out of my boring everyday look and start wearing a statement necklace everywhere, including the grocery store. XO, Jill

I love your necklaces so much! They are not as big as many of the statement neclaces, but so chic and elegant! <3
I hope you've had great holidays and spent lots of time with your family))

You are so lovely! I love those necklaces... but as a Texas girl, I think you could go bigger if you wanted. ;)

Shoot, Jill, you're so beautiful! And I love how you manage to look so glamorous, like the CEO of Bloomingdale's really, in front of a wall of child art. ;-)

Okay, I see that you have a collet necklace already, but I still think you need one of those Duchessa ones you like.

I MUST find that blue collar necklace from J Crew. I have been searching for months for one like this for my wedding. Any ideas?
