How I Wear My: Boho

Adrienne of The Rich Life in Wine Country.

Adrienne and I thought there was no better way to shed winter’s layers than to devote this month’s “How I Wear My” to a style that seems especially made for warmer months—boho!

What I found most interesting about putting this post together was how many people said they do not normally wear boho! I think it’s great that everyone who joined us this month gave it a try anyway, and what I love about the range of styles this month is learning that that you can go full-on boho, or you can just add elements of its easy breezy feel to your look. Enjoy!

Love this look on Adrienne!

Adrienne of The Rich Life in Wine Country, my “How I Wear My” partner, writes, “After many, many years of not wearing high-waisted pants nor flares, I decided to try both again with this pair of jeans from Gap. With my jeans I am wearing an off-white scoop neck top by Bay Area designer, Lesley Evers, and a long fringe cardigan I bought last summer in San Diego. I bought the extra-long length in the jeans so a heel was a must - I wore my peep-toe booties. For jewelry, I added a Kay & Star tassel necklace. I also carried my cute fringe bag by Steve Madden that I bought in Las Vegas. I normally wouldn’t wear so much fringe all at once but I thought I’d boho-out a little for this month’s theme!”

I think Adrienne looks so ethereal and soft in this photo, this is clearly a style that works so well for her. I am especially crazy for her cardigan, necklace and watch!

Glenda of So What To Twenty!

Glenda of So What To Twenty! is wearing a fabulous H&M dress in a gorgeous shade of orange that looks so good on her! Her amazing sandals feature metallic straps and a floral block heel, which I love. Glenda makes an astute (and accurate) observation in her post on the subject that what the fashion industry calls “Festival Wear,” in honor of gigantic music festivals like Coachella, is really just another way of saying “Boho” and I am in total agreement. I do have to say that those Coachella attendees could learn a thing or two from studying Glenda’s style because she looks so glamorous! I had to include a closer shot of the shoes, because I love them so (you will too).

Glenda’s beautiful shoes are by Tildon Blaire.

Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun.

Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun says, “I found this funky embroidered vest at a thrift shop and decided to style it with flares and a long crochet cardigan. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the boho look!”

I think this is Dawn Lucy in her style element, looking so good. Honestly, this could be on a cover of an Eagles album from back in the day, right? She looks like their poster girl advertising the fun of California life!

Pam of Over 50 Feeling 40.

Pam of Over 50 Feeling 40 is wearing a coral colored tunic by Bryn Walker over slim white trousers and silver genie slippers. I love that she paired two chunky necklaces with this ensemble. I also love the whole vibe here, which reminds me of Talitha Getty. This is my new favorite picture of Pam! Marrakesh, anyone?

Catherine of Not Dressed As Lamb.

Catherine of Not Dressed As Lamb wore this fantastic boho look on a trip to Santorini last year. What a perfect vibe for Greece! I am especially crazy for her Asos scarf and “Dipped Leaf” earrings by Accessorize. What a glamorous look for a trip to the Greek isles.

Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo.

Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo writes, “I put this look together after going to a Janis Joplin tribute. Very 1970s hippie. Both the boots and the bag have fringe which is a nod to boho, the rest of the outfit might be more rocker than boho. The long vest, belt and boots were all thrifted.”

I cannot imagine doing a boho post without Suzanne and I have to say, this is my new favorite picture of her! I love every bit of this outfit—from the raspberry-colored hat, to the long vest, layered necklaces, fringed bag, and distressed denim tucked into tall boots. I knew Suzanne would come through with a great outfit but this was even better than I hoped for!

Trina of Tea Time With Trina.

Trina of Tea Time With Trina says, “I’ve pulled out some old—and I mean really old— flare jeans (surprised they still fit), and added some new clog-type sandals, my vintage Juicy embroidered bag, a linen tunic and vest. Instead of a floppy hat, I chose to simply put on a little braided headband. It’s boho time! This is such a fun theme, and one I embrace quite frequently.”

Love this pic of Trina.

If Dawn Lucy is the cover girl for the Eagles, then this photo of Trina should be on the album of the famous musical Hair! She looks like the perfect embodiment of the Age of Aquarius!

No need to adjust your monitor! Our friend Cari had a bit of trouble with her tablet and couldn’t edit her picture to remove the green in it. After an attempt to fix the color by Adrienne (thank you, my dear!) I decided to use it anyway since this shade, along with Cari’s great outfit, makes the photo look very boho to me! Cari writes, “It doesn’t get much better outfit-wise for me than faded Levi’s, a paisley top in rich earth-tones, a crocheted midi-vest, comfortably worn-in western boots, antiqued silver and turquoise jewelry – all purchased from various thrift stores. For me it’s much more inspiring to be one with nature after the snow melts.”

I love that Cari's beautiful silver hair got in on the color error of her photo editing application and was tinted green too. It looks so cool on her, especially with the vibe of this photo!

Nora of Jacket Society.

Nora of Jacket Society writes, “I am wearing Jacket Society Gray and Black Print Kaftan, which has been a bestseller for us, with my Rag and Bone skinny black jeans, Circus by Sam Edelman booties, and my black Gucci bag.”

As faithful to jackets as Nora is, I love that she has been wearing kaftans lately. This one is perfect, so I can understand why it is selling so well on her site. It would be good now and even better in the summer on the beach!

Tamera of Tamera Beardsley.

Tamera of Tamera Beardsley writes, “My recent vintage hat find brings new life to some well-loved boho pieces. It is the free spirit of eclectic combining with boho … that really speaks to my heart.”

Oh the romance and golden hues in this photo of Tamera! She is another lady I can’t imagine doing a boho post without and I love everything she is wearing in this picture. Cheers to her and pour me a glass of whatever she is enjoying on the beach!

Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life.

Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life writes, “I don’t really wear much boho and I thought it was fun to give it an attempt with a boho flair for the office. This Loft top has a boho vibe to it as does the natural stone necklace I paired it with.”

I love that Alice is showing us all how to wear boho to work and make it office appropriate! I also love these colors on her.

Linda of A Labour of Life.

Linda of A Labour of Life got some boho inspiration from our friend Debbie at Fashion Fairy Dust. Linda writes, “Debbie does the boho look so well and I figured what the heck, I like the look so let’s give it a go.”

She paired a black flora Target fringe duster (love) with a black dress, black tights, over-the-knee boots from Shoe Dazzle, and a statement necklace. Linda’s picture is a great reminder to me that while boho may seem like it is ideal for warmer months, it works just as well when there is snow on the ground!

Greetje of No Fear of Fashion.

Greetje of No Fear of Fashion says she normally does not do boho, but I think her dress is a perfect example of getting that boho feeling while staying true to your own sense of style.

Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style.

Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style says, “This category is quite new to me...definitely out of my box! But I think that’s the fun of fashion—spreading your wings and trying new things! My husband calls me his ‘hippy chick’ when I put anything on that reminds him of his high school days! I am wearing my newly thrifted maxi skirt, and I grabbed my fringe purse! I’m ready for anything!”

I think Jodie can wear this lovely skirt both now and into the summer—I hope her husband will take her for a romantic walk on a beach and she is wearing this, it will be perfect!

Rena of Fine, Whatever.

Rena of Fine, Whatever says, “I found this skirt at a local Goodwill and, not only did the mix of colors and patterns grab my eye, the swirl of fabric pieces reminded me of a skirt I had back in the 70s. Another plus for this skirt is that because of the darker colors I can wear it all year long. Here with light layers and sandals it’s perfect for early spring but it would look just as good with boots and a chunky sweater in colder weather.”

Rena’s look points out once again that you can have fun with boho by adding just a touch of it to your ensemble. The necklace and sandals lend a boho vibe as well.

Maryna of Dragonfly’s Heart.

Maryna of Dragonfly’s Heart writes, “I love boho and often incorporate its elements into my personal style. I don’t think I can ever be ‘full-time’ boho, but combining certain bohemian pieces with something either edgy and structured or simple and basic is my favorite thing ever. This dress was technically a birthday gift from my co-workers - in the sense that for my birthday I received some money from them and immediately bought this dress as I was in love with it for a few months. When a beautiful piece of clothing waits for you to take it home for such a long time, you know this item is truly yours!”

I like that Maryna edged up her floral dress with a black leather jacket and because she is currently in Italy, it reminds me so much of when I was in Rome and all the Italian ladies seemed to wear a black leather jacket over everything. As a group they made that item look so sexy!

Overlooking Palermo!

Nicole of High Latitude Style.

Nicole of High Latitude Style had this to say about boho: “I grew out my Bohemian phase in my late teens, and I am not really sure whether I can really say that my style back then was Bohemian, but it had a lot of Bohemian elements. Today I typically just wear one Bohemian piece and style it in a classic-with-a-twist way, like this Indian embroidered tunic shirt with skinnies and lemon pumps.”

Nicole’s delicate and feminine tunic is the ideal way to work a boho feel into your outfit, without letting it take over. I like this paired with the unexpected surprise of bright yellow high heels!

Andrea of Andrea’s Wellness Notes.

Andrea of Andrea’s Wellness Notes says, “I grew up in the 70s, but I didn’t really like anything boho until fairly recently. I absolutely love my flare jeans, however. I like to pair them with a simple boho-inspired top (there is embroidery on the top that’s hard to see), a heart scarf, clogs, and my fun Desigual bag.”

I like this look on Andrea, and hello long legs! Also, I have to say, I think Andrea needs a spot in my Bob Hall of Fame!

Ana of Mrs. American Made.

Ana of Mrs. American Made writes, “I live in a very boho-friendly town with a serious college scene and a strong hippie history, but somehow I have not fully embraced this fashion trend. It seems as though I have pieces here and there in my wardrobe that hint a boho vibe, but these examples are the closest I came to a full outfit! Here I am wearing a funky patterned top with lots of jewelry and my hair rarely seen as ‘au naturel’ and a bit wavy. But again, I wear this festive top with classic blue jeans and brown leather tall boots.”

I understand just what Ana means, I have boho pieces in my closet but don’t normally go with this look. I like what Ana has done here to stay true to her regular look and yet lend it a boho feel with her wavy hair (gorgeous!) and top. I also love her layered necklaces and dark nails!

Claudia of HappyFace313.

Claudia of HappyFace313 writes, “Boho reminds me of the 70s (of which I spent some years in Santa Monica, California) and of a very laid-back Southern California style. Of jeans, colorful blouses, fringes, comfortable shoes and lots of silver jewelry. Although my jeans and blouse are rather dark, the accessories add color - my good old Hermès Garden Party Bag with the pompoms, my silver and orange bracelets, and my orange pendant. I don’t know if my sandals are boho—I just went for the color!”

I think Claudia can take this look to Santa Monica—or anywhere else in California—any time she wants! I love this tunic on her so much—the black, the embroidery—the sandals make the outfit upscale boho, by way of Hermès (not a bad thing) and I am loving her hair too! Claudia also shows us how to take a lovely Hermès Garden Party bag and boho it up a bit with colorful leather tassels.

I like these colors against a background of black!

Cheryl of Northwest Mountain Living.

Cheryl of Northwest Mountain Living says, “Bohemian Style is my favorite! This sweater is a fun color called Golf Green. It is lightweight and very soft, perfect for spring weather, especially here in the mountains. I thought the white jeans made the sweater pop even more and loved the contrast of the turquoise blue necklace and earrings. The wedge booties seemed a perfect neutral that wouldn’t detract from the outfit.”

Who says boho has to be about pattern? I love Cheryl’s take on it, which involves solid colors and wedge heels. And turquoise with green (or white!) is one of my favorite colors pairings ever, so I am also a big fan of Cheryl’s jewelry selections!

I never think of myself as a boho gal, and yet some bohemian pieces have made it into my closet, particularly long draped sweaters and jeans with a slight flare. I decided to wear my black textured and fringed poncho (My $15 special straight from Queens! I also had it on last October for “How I Wear My: Poncho or Wrap”), dark denim, and my Jacket Society crystal tassel necklace, one of my favorite pieces of jewelry.

Detail of the Jacket Society necklace and a YSL bag. I adore both!

I wanted to add some color to this outfit so I included my YSL Tribute tote in aubergine and an old leopard print cuff I bought many years ago at La Crasia inside Grand Central Terminal. The red watch is Timex and I call it my practice Cartier because it is very similar to their Tank Solo watch, only I got it for $10 on eBay. It will have to do (and does quite well, actually) while I keep adding to my Jewelry Fund for the real thing someday.

La Crasia cuff, Timex watch.

While I was having my picture taken a certain feline decided to come see what was happening, so I had to stop and give kitty a scratch. She would take a big nap on this poncho if I let her, she loves anything with texture.

Tippi deigns to accept a scratch.

How are you feeling about boho these days? Embracing it or favoring other styles instead?

For May, the month of Mother’s Day, graduations, and the unofficial start of summer, let’s break out the most classic and ladylike of jewelry—pearls! Whether you wear them as a single or triple strand, prefer them as a choker or in opera length, wear them in a bracelet, ring or as a pair of studs, whether they are real or faux or white or black, style your strand(s) and join us for “How I Wear My: Pearls.” Send photos to us at by May 2, 2016, and be sure to tell us a little about your pearls and your look!

Do swing by Adrienne’s to see even more boho looks.

And THANK YOU to all the fine foxes who participated this month!

What a super fun HIWM! I love seeing all the ladies rocking that 70's vibe. Thanks for the sweet compliment ... I'd totally be at home at an Eagles concert in the 70's!

So, pearls next month, hm? Geez, that will be a stretch for me, but I'll see what I can do! You guys got me to try white jeans, so anything is possible! ;)

This turned out better than I thought. Thought I'd need to bringing the Gong Show hammer but everyone correctly waded in with some boho elements rather than diving head first 'hippie-chick' and looking as authentic as Justin Beiber with his new dreadlocks.
Jill, you got everything right as boho is even more precarious with your fab bob to really nail a fringey look with Miya's masterful touch, go Flapper and heavy on the pearls which I see is the next installment.

Jill said...

Hi Dawn Lucy, I love that picture of you, it really needs to be on an album cover! I am so glad you joined us, it would not have been the same without you. x

Jill said...

Oh GSL, I had the same thought as you, Uh-oh, I just got my hair cut, this boho thing is not gonna work. But I guess it turned out alright. I wish I had some flapper fringe for next month, but my hair will be slightly grown out by then and I am feeling very Kentucky Derby...So glad you did not bring your Gong Show hammer to this post since we all know what a harsh taskmaster you are! x

Wow! Lots of participants this month! So fun that it is growing.

There is always so much unique inspiration here.

Thanks again for hosting : )

Suzanne, I am so crazy about both of your looks this month. And do not even get me started on the eye makeup in the photo on Adrienne's blog. I love it! Thank you for joining us once again! xx

It was fun to see as usual but I gotta say Glenda is wearing the most beautiful coloured dress! Real head turner. But it's always interesting to see how everyone interprets it x

Love all these looks here, Jill! I love your tassel necklace and your Rachel Zoe-esque look.
What a great turnout, as usual!
Looking forward to Pearls next month.

So many great looks! I also love that you can "sprinkle" a bit of boho into your outfit if you don't want to do full-on boho, or it doesn't come naturally to you like it does to Dawn Lucy or Suzanne for example. For me, I can see that now that I have started adding a few pieces here and there, I'll probably add some more... :-)

Thanks for the Bob compliment, too!

What I found interesting is the mix of us that said, we don't really do boho vs the ones that do it all the time! I'd almost say it was 50/50?
It was a great excercise---thanks so much!! jodie

:-) Hi Jill,

this must have been one of the BEST HIWM editions!
So many participants! So many fun styles! Loved every single one of them.
I can't really say who I liked best, as every outfit had something special - something boho.
Thank you and Adrienne for putting this together for all of us! XO

I am excited about next month's HIWM - pearls! Yay! The date is already in my calendar!

Big hug xo :-)

Was just saying over at Adrienne's that I knew this would be a knock out How I Wear My... month and wow, isn't it just? So many different interpretations and looks. Wonderful.
I love the texture of your poncho, Jill.

Can't wait for pearls. They are my birthstone!

Hi Pam, I feel I am pretty minimal when it comes to boho too. I loved your look. That coral tunic looks so good on you, especially with white pants! xx

Hi Andrea, so glad you could join us. I'm with you, I can sprinkle some boho into my look but it's not my natural state! You have a gorgeous bob, my all-time favorite haircut! xx

No Fear of Fashion said...

Thank you for including me Jill. I still think my dress isn't really Boho, but as my husband dislikes it just as much as he does my white lace top (on "How I wear" at The Rich life) it might just have a touch of that haha. He doesn't like Boho at all.
Thanks for giving me inspiration with your black poncho. I need to style a similar top and you gave me direction.

Jill said...

Hi Nora, the JS necklace is one of my favorite pieces and I get compliments on it every single time I wear it out! x

Hi Jodie, it was so interesting to me that most people do NOT wear boho. I am glad you could join us this month. I hope to see you for pearls! x

Hi Tamera, I want to join you in that picture so bad! You look gorgeous and I'd love to know what cocktail was in that beautiful silver cup. Cheers to you and your inspirational photos. xx

Hi Claudia, I really liked your look this month and I loved your hair in particular! I was surprised by how many responses I got to some posts I've done about pearls and between that and your suggestion that we devote a HIWM to them, it seems like the right time. I am looking forward to seeing what you share with us! xx

Hi Alice, I am really glad you joined us and did an office appropriate boho look, that was so creative and well done! Those colors are SO good on you, hope they get heavy rotation in your closet. x

Hi Greetje! I am glad you joined us this month. I hope you add a tassel necklace to your top if it is similar to my black poncho. The necklaces that Nora sells on her site are fabulous! x
