I have really noticed a big uptick in Naomi Watts’ style quotient regarding jewelry since she started working with stylist Jeanann Williams in 2012 and I thought this diamond Bulgari necklace and emerald and diamond earrings she wore to Cannes last week fit in nicely with the greater focus on jewelry from her the past few years. I love that she wore the necklace and earrings with a black lace and tulle gown. I normally am not a big fan of black on the red carpet but I always change my mind when the black dress is the backdrop for amazing jewels. We saw the same with Cate Blanchett and the Tiffany & Co. turquoise bib necklace earlier this year! The very glamorous dress Naomi wore is by Ralph Lauren and in some of the pictures she looks like a modern day Grace Kelly, don’t you think? Gorgeous!

There’s a good article over at The New York Times called “Carats at Cannes” by Maria Doulton, the founder of The Jewellry Editor, one of my new favorite jewelry websites. It’s interesting to read how the jewelry is starting to become more important than the dress, depending on the venue, and Naomi’s stylist Ms. Williams pretty much says that when she admits, upon being questioned about whether the dress or the jewels come first, “For Cannes it’s all about the sparkle, so it’s jewels first. Necklaces do limit the dress options, but they are always worth it.”

I also found this quote from Ms. Williams interesting: “Ideally I would like to see the jewels at least two months out, because that allows us to do a custom gown with a designer,” she said. “But clearly that is not always possible.”

With that sentiment, and with the fact that the red carpet translates into big business for jewelers, I have to wonder if there will be an even greater focus on gems at the Oscars in 2016. That is fine with me. I would love to see more statement or archival jewelry worn on the red carpet. It is always a visual treat to view what jewelry designers have dreamed up, either now or in the past.

What do you think of these Bulgari gems on Naomi?
