How I Wear My: Florals

Adrienne of The Rich Life (on a budget).

With botanic and home gardens in full bloom and June the month of brides, graduates, and dads (hey, some guys like flowers!), Adrienne of The Rich Life (on a budget) and I thought it was a great time to devote this month’s “How I Wear My” to florals.

This post is another perfect case in point that florals can be done in so many wonderful ways. I love all these looks and I think you will too!

Adrienne, above, of The Rich Life (on a budget) looks gorgeous in a floral shirt by August Silk she found at Goodwill worn over a dress by Yala, made from bamboo material!

Veshoevius of The Taxonomy of My Wardrobe.

Veshoevius of The Taxonomy of My Wardrobe wore these amazing floral-print pajama trousers on a recent holiday in Spain. I love that shade of blue in both the pants and the sweater.

Heather of Vintage French Chic.

Heather of Vintage French Chic is carrying a wonderful floral bag by Kim White Handbags. Heather writes of the designer, “She uses vintage deadstock material to make her bags, including a great selection of vintage car fabrics. Fun stuff!”

Sheree of It’s Not That Deep.

Sheree of It’s Not That Deep never fails to inspire me with the way she puts clothes together and she has done it once again with this edgy take on florals. She is wearing a thrifted Dickies shirtdress over a thrifted romper. I love this look!

My, those are long legs!

My mom.
My mom looks fabulous in her black and white faux-wrap dress and an item I have been thinking about again, the white blazer. I love the red roses behind her!

Sarah of Cloud of Secrets.

Sarah of Cloud of Secrets admits she does not have a lot of florals in her closet. This dress, however, caught her eye—and mine too because it is perfect on her. It was designed by Clinton Kelly of What Not to Wear (I love that show and I love that guy). Read here about what he had to say about Sarah in this dress when he saw it on her!

Serene of The Elegant Bohemian.

Serene of The Elegant Bohemian stays true to her love of the bohemian style with this floaty (and flirty) floral dress paired with boots.

Heather of Stylemindchic.

Heather of Stylemindchic wears a great gray, white, and black maxi floral dress in her kitchen on Mother’s Day. I say yes to the dress and to the strawberry tart she is sprinkling sugar over!

Silk Path Diary nailing it in black & white!

Silk Path Diary writes of her look:

“The black and white dress is by an Italian label and is so easy to wear dressed up or down on the warmest days and layered up for cooler weather.”

Aya of Couturgatory.

Aya of Couturgatory is wearing a thrifted dress that mixes florals, stripes and a black bodice in a very unique way. This is great for summer!

Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo Style Files. I love this skirt!

Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo Style Files says of her skirt:

“I love 1950s-style full skirts and this one is so pretty. It was a bit large but I took it in and took it up by about 3 inches. Now I love it.”

Paula of Fashion Over Fifty.

Paula of Fashion Over Fifty sent me a funny email saying that the way she wears florals is abstractly! I love this photo collage, her floral skirt, and her tipped cardigan as well.

Maryna of Antares: Alpha Scorpii.

Maryna of Antares: Alpha Scorpii is currently living and working in Thailand. She writes of her skirt:

“As you know I still live out of my suitcase and I don’t have many pretty things to wear. But I have this floral skirt that saves me on every occasion when I want to look a little bit fancy (at least fancier than shorts and a tee). This picture was taken during the celebrations of Thai New Year (Songkran). The skirt is thrifted.”

Jeannie of Gracefully 50.

Jeannie of Gracefully 50 is a gal after my own heart pairing florals with stripes and black!

Teresa is wearing a beautiful vintage Escada silk blouse. Photo by Denton Taylor.

Teresa is one lucky lady. Not only does her very talented photographer husband Denton Taylor take her picture, he likes fashion as much as the rest of us—he told me how they scored multiple pairs of Prada hot rod heels, some on eBay, and a pair at a Prada boutique for ½ off at the end of the season. What? Why do I never have this luck? This lovely vintage Escada blouse Teresa wears is no exception—it was purchased on eBay!

Sacramento of MIS PAPELICOS.

Sacramento of MIS PAPELICOS looks so lovely in this mix of stripes and florals. It is perfect with the patterned skirt!

I love the details in this picture.

Trying out the new J. Crew striped floral tee. What do you think?

As for me, I like my florals in small doses, in one of two ways—either big or mixed with stripes. This is my new J. Crew striped and floral tee that I broke my shopping ban for since it was on sale. It is really comfortable and I love the colorful blooms with the navy stripes, but I think this might be too many flowers for me all at once so I am probably going to wear it with a black jacket or cardigan just to bring the flowers down to a minimum.

Tippi the cat, on the floor, is either overheated or not impressed. Or both!

I added a black jacket to tone down the florals a bit.

Another floral I have in my closet is the Liberty of London for Target blouse my mother gave me a few years ago—which I have yet to wear! It is sleeveless, and when you have skinny stick arms like I do you are not having Michelle Obama moments of flashing them every chance you get. You put on a jacket or sweater as a courtesy to other people’s eyes.

Or maybe that’s just me.

I may actually wear this out somewhere because I love it with white jeans and the Kelly & Katie metallic wedge sandals I bought last summer from DSW. But there will definitely be a jacket over my arms!

Liberty of London for Target blouse.

White jeans with metallic strappy wedges. I am ready for summer!

Where’s my jacket?
How do you like your florals these days?

Now that the heat is on and it feels like summer has already started—at least in the U.S.—we know the one accessory that you are using every day is your pair of sunglasses! So please join us for “How I Wear My: Sunglasses” by sending a picture to Adrienne or me by July 1. Whether you favor aviators or wayfarers, sleek wraparounds or oversized glamour shades, we can’t wait to see you in your sunnies!

Do head over to Adrienne to see the other great floral looks.

And thanks to all the fine foxes who participated this month! This is the 20th post in the “How I Wear My” series and our biggest group to date. Thank you to all the people who make these posts so fun to do!

Thank goodness we decided to split these posts between the two of us. So much floral fabulousness, I love it!
You look great in floral prints, Jill. I agree with Jane - you do NOT need a jacket. I would love to have your arms!
Looking forward to sunnies in July!

Thank you for including me, Jill! Your striped t-shirt looks so pretty, casual yet chic with the dark jeans, belt, and metallic sandals. I like the Rococo spin on your mom's floral, and the crisp white jacket. And I'm coveting Silk Path Diary's delicate black-and-white dress with the bold pink kimono belt.

Thanks for doing this, so much fun, and thanks for including my wife!

Your arms are great, as is your outfit!

Also, love Sharee, and Suzzanne! Great photos.

Sacramento, love the way you push the limits and make it all work.

To heighten the echo here - you look fabulous in the liberty blouse - no jacket needed!

As for floral/striped tee - it looks good both ways (and I'm not a huge floral person either!)

Both looks are great on you - enjoy them both!

I enjoy your blog , thank you.
Off topic here, but stay with me!
I visited early a while ago to see your DIY french jacket, and I do not see it- did you finish it? Am I looking for it in the right spot?
Thank you

Hi Joanne! I did NOT finish my DIY Chanel jacket, I have to rework the muslin because the fit was not right after the first try. I want it tighter in the bodice. Please check back, I am going to interview Claire Shaeffer very soon about her upcoming book on the Chanel jacket! I cannot wait! XO, Jill

Hi Jill!
What a fun 'flower power' post you and Adrienne have put together here. These fashions are fab! I know it must be loads of work-but it's so much fun. As for you-I think your slim arms and legs are so perfectly suited for fashions of all kinds. I say flaunt it! I tend to grab a jacket for the opposite reason so you are modelicious. Thanks again for the fashionable fun!
xx, Heather

So my familiar faces and some new ones too. I loved "meeting" your mother for the first time! And seeing two of your looks--you have SLENDER arms and could wear so many looks. I love the pink floral on you.

I'd kill to have your arms, Jill! I don't see the need to cover them up, but I do like the blazer over the JCrew shirt. Love the Target look as well. It's the epitome of effortless Summer chic!

Thanks for your comment on my blog and for your part in co-hosting HIWM with Adrienne. I love participating because you both make me feel very welcomed ;-)

I wouldn't have thought of putting stripes and florals together but your top and Sacramento's outfit have won me over to the combination. I'm so glad you featured florals - I adore florals and everyone looks blooming gorgeous in their outfits!

Just loved all these looks! You have some very stylish readers! I just love it when someone thinks out of the box and lots of these gals did and look great.

Your J Crew top I love too. In fact they were out of my size. The mix of floral and stripes is cute too with the jacket. I have to say though your pink Liberty top is so darling! I had one of these in a green, but it was cotton and not nearly as pretty. That print is so lovely. Your arms look very shapely and you are crazy not to show them! It looks like you work out and I wish mine were so defined! Lucky girl.

Thanks for sharing all these great looks and having your blog as a forum for others. So kind. No wonder Adrienne and you are partners!

Also, following your lovely blog. Just got a small chance to read some of your archive and as a fashion lover I can't wait to read more when I get a chance!

And good luck with the end of school! You're almost there!

I'm a lover of stripes and have far too many. I don't really like them mixed with florals, so I held back on the J Crew when I saw it. It was too much for me, but I think it looks great on you. You've inspired me to send you a picture for your next series on sunglasses. Looking forward to playing.
